The workshop first started fifteen years ago, a period of time when similar workshops were closing down taking with them a generation who had precious knowledge and were based in the area, which would have been lost forever. For Cave Michelangelo, the training of young sculptors was a great challenge, and one which could breathe life into a new generation of sculpture students in Carrara which has always been seen as a reference point in the history of Italian sculpture. Just think about Henry Moore, or Mario Merz and many others before them.
Marble working and the culture which surrounds it is, if nothing else a great starting point. Studi d’Arte Cave Michelangelo has worked with an impressive number of the biggest names in contemporary art. It is a place where artist’s ideas are transformed into works of marble. Amongst others: Cattelan, Fabre, Buren, Nagasawa.
